Hardwood floorings are expensive.
So expensive that the RTE’s resident expert, Joe Collins, has developed a solution for those of us who want to keep them.
“There are loads of products out there that you can buy in a store and you can do your own research, you can make your own product, but you can’t make a cheap product that will do it,” he says.
The key is to look at what the materials are made of and what the manufacturer is offering for it.
This is where Collins comes in.
The architect has been researching the properties of different materials and then building a product to mimic that.
He calls his product the Flooring Made from the Hardest Wood, or FHM.
Collins has developed the product as a cheaper alternative to cheaper flooring options, but also a product that you should be able to buy online.
“The main thing with the product is that it’s made from the hardest wood.
You know, it’s got a lot of hard wood that has been hard, and so it’s very durable, it’ll last a long time, it will last in the environment, it can be used in a house for a long period of time, and it’s incredibly soft,” he explains.
“It’s very light, so you don’t have to have a lot more strength than you do with concrete.”
And while the product itself isn’t the easiest to work with, it is easy to build up the foundation and finish with the help of a jointer.
“So that’s why the whole process is very straightforward,” he continues.
The product is available to order from online and can be built in just minutes. “
Then you can put in your own material and you’ll be ready to go.”

The project is currently being supported by the Department of Transport and Environment, so Collins is hoping to get the product to the market within a year.
It is also possible to find FHM products online and in brick and mortar shops, but it can also be found in specialist retailers like Lowe’s, HomeGoods, and Lowe’s Superstore.
The product costs about £20 for a single floor, but Collins has set up a crowdfunding page to help fund it, and has also been able to raise £1,000 so far.
You can also get a sample of the product by going to the Floorwood project page and pledging £10.
